Auditions

Our senior choir, Kōkako, is an auditioned choir for children aged 10 years and older. Singers are welcome to try out Kōkako for a rehearsal or two to see if it is a good fit for them before auditioning. However, they will need to have a successful audition in order to remain in this choir.

We usually hold general auditions at the start of Term 1 (or the week before); contact the Administrator at wyvchoir@gmail.com for details.

As singers often find us later in the year, we have also developed a system of rolling auditions, where a singer attends one or two rehearsals in order to get a sense of the group and develop familiarity with our team before auditioning. The music team will then pull them out for an audition in a separate space during rehearsal time.

Who can audition:

Children aged 10 or 11 are invited to audition for a place in Kōkako. They can also choose to comtinue in our junior (unauditioned) choir, Korimako.

Children aged 12 or older are expected to audition for a place in Kōkako, as Korimako is not a suitable learning environment for singers of this age.

What you need to know about the audition:

The audition process is designed to be as relaxing and child friendly as possible! We want your child to feel that they have done their best in a supportive and encouraging environment. The WYV music team will be with your child during their audition. Each audition is up to 10 minutes long.

Parents are asked to wait in the Atrium while auditions are taking place in the Auditorium or an adjacent practice room.

The music team will take them through a few vocal exercises to see what their range is, and where their voice is at in regards to their age. They will be asked to clap back some rhythms, and to sing the New Zealand National Anthem in Maori or another song that they know well. Feel free to email the Administrator with any questions or concerns: wyvchoir@gmail.com

Audition outcome:

You will receive notification from the Administrator of the outcome of your child’s audition. If several auditions were being conducted on the same say, it might take up to five working days to hear back about the results. We understand that your child will be anxious to find out quickly! The music team will be working hard to deliver the results as soon as possible.

If a child does not meet the requirements after the audition process, the music team will discuss the singer’s options with them and their family.
